Altelefon Alkharban—Téléphone Cassé

Altelefon Alkharban—Téléphone Cassé

Rana El Nemr

The recently renovated and renamed «Paris Square» communicates elements, which carry aesthetical, cultural and historical values. «Téléphone Cassé» is an attempt to explore how these values are received and perceived. It also provides a platform to correspond.

«Téléphone Cassé» is a game we used to play as children, where the amusement was mishearing, misinforming, thus miscommunication. Later, as adults, miscommunication became less fun and we were also introduced to dis-communication. This event is a short public intervention, which playfully deals with the mature world of communication.» Rana El Nemr

In the intervention, participators are given small wooden toys of men, women, children, horses & camels.

The little souvenirs from Amman are chosen to represent elements from a Jordanian context, which are similar to the ones found in the Grand Palais Statue Image, installed on the telephone & advertising booth of the newly renovated & renamed «Paris Square» in Amman.

Inside the square, on a table, set with background and a polaroid camera, each participant creates a composition or scenario of his/her choice with the given elements. In and around the square, the sound of clicking the toys on the metal sheet underneath, and voices describing & discussing the scenarios could be heard through microphones. Every composition is photographed and installed on the same cylindrical booth with the Grand Palais Statue Image. Another photograph of the creator of the composition posing in front of the French Fountain in the same square is given to him/her as a souvenir.
