Nigist Goytom

My name is Nigist Goytom Gebrehiwot. I was born on July 30, 1988 in Ethiopia. Since my father is Eritrean and my mother Ethiopian we found ourselves in a difficult situation during the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea (1998-2000). Despite the challenging times me and my two elder Siblings Eden and Hiruy enjoyed a good education.
Already as a young girl I attend classes in art and design and also won national and international art competitions. In 2006, I passed the entrance exam to the University of Addis Ababa and won a scholarship for architecture. From 2007 to 2012 I studied at the University’s Ethiopian Institute for Architecture, Building and Construction (EiABC). In 2010 I met my future husband in a collaborative project on sustainable housing with ETH Zurich. Once I graduated from the University in spring 2012, we married in Zurich in April 2012 and then moved to Rome where my husband started to work for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). During the time in Rome I worked for two architects, did a one-month internship in archeology in Villa Hadriana, participated in design and photography competitions and started a Masters program in Art, Architecture and the City‘ at Roma Tre University.
In September 2013, me and my husband returned to Zurich where I was employed by the architecture firm 'Birchmeier Uhlmann‘ in Zürich Altstetten. In addition to my professional work I also continue to work on my Master thesis which focuses on untold stories of minorities in the city. The final project of the thesis consists of a public object that is designed to give these untold stories a public visibility.
